According to the 2025 PRRI Census of American Religion, nearly three in ten Americans (28%) identify as religiously unaffiliated, including atheists, agnostics, and those who identify as “nothing in particular.”
Unaffiliated Americans are more likely to identify as liberal (45%), compared with 39% of non-Christians, 24% of Christians of color, and 16% of white Christians. They also have the lowest median age (41), compared with white Christians (56), Christians of color (46), and non-Christians (45). However, there are key differences among the subgroups that make up the religiously unaffiliated.
