Americans are roughly split as to whether right-wing groups (44%) or left-wing groups (41%) are responsible for most political violence today. Independents are 10 percentage points more likely to say that right-wing groups (45%) are the most responsible for political violence today than left-wing groups (35%).

A solid majority of Americans are more likely to agree with the statement “Today we are in real danger of losing important democratic rights and freedoms we have had in this country” (68%) than with the statement “The important democratic rights and freedoms we have in this country will remain protected into the future” (29%). Republicans are equally divided between the first and second statement (51% vs. 47%).

Most Americans (69%) disagree with the statement “If states cannot get voter fraud under control, President Trump should postpone the 2026 midterm elections for Congress,” compared with 26% who agree.

Only 16% of Americans agree with the statement “When decisions by Congress or the Supreme Court hold our country back, the president should be able to ignore them,” while more than three-quarters of Americans (78%) disagree.

If the 2026 midterm election were held today, 33% of Americans say they would vote for the Democratic candidate, 30% say they would vote for the Republican candidate, 20% say they do not know who they would vote for, and one in ten (12%) say they would not vote in the midterms. Just 4% say they would vote for a third party or some other candidate.
