While the majority of Texans support abortion legality, views are deeply divided by party.
With recent polls showing Democratic nominee James Talarico leading Republican nominee Ken Paxton in the 2026 Texas Senate race, Democrats’ hopes of flipping a crucial seat in Texas may be in reach. Despite affordability being a main concern for voters this year — and an issue many Democrats across the country are emphasizing in their campaigns — Republican Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick recently warned that Talarico’s past comments on social issues will still matter to Texas voters.
Patrick argued that Talarico is not well known yet among many Texans, and said that Talarico’s beliefs, which Patrick characterized as “God has multiple genders. The Bible supports abortion,” would hurt his standing with Texas voters.
Texans’ Attitudes Towards Abortion Legality, by Party
While Texans are slightly less likely than the average American to say that abortion should be legal in all or most cases, a majority do support abortion legality (55% of Texans vs. 61% of all Americans). However, Texas Republicans — who are a plurality of the state’s residents — are significantly less likely to support abortion legality (34%) than Texas independents (55%) and Democrats (87%).
Survey Methodology
