Trump Escalates Anti-Muslim Attacks Against El-Sayed in Michigan

Majority of Michiganders hold an unfavorable view of President Trump over a year into his second presidential term.

The Associated Press recently covered President Trump’s intensifying anti-Muslim rhetoric against Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, portraying him as a national security threat and questioning his loyalty to the United States. With Republicans on the defensive over inflation, rising fuel prices, and the Iran war, Trump has sought to boost turnout by casting El-Sayed and other Democratic candidates as existential threats to America rather than electoral rivals.

PRRI finds that one-third of Michiganders (33%) have a favorable view of Trump, compared with 36% of Americans nationally. Among Michigan Republicans, 74% view Trump favorably, compared with 29% of the state’s independents, and just 5% of Democrats. Though a plurality of Michigan residents identify as Republican (36%), 25% identify as independents, and 25% as Democrats.

Additionally, looking at religion, 2% of Michigan residents identify as Muslim, compared with 1% of all Americans.
