At the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, President Donald Trump praised Texas Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton’s work as Texas Attorney General, calling him “the single greatest attorney general” of the state. During his speech at the convention, Paxton spoke on his “Protecting the Texas Promise” economic plan and criticized his opponent, Democratic State Rep. James Talarico, for past comments on his Christian faith. A recent poll of Texas voters found that Talarico is favored over Paxton (42% vs. 39%), and 43% of Texas voters approve of Trump’s job as president in his second term.  

Similarly, PRRI finds overall negative favorability of Trump in 2026, with around three in ten Texans (32%) viewing the president favorably.  More than four in ten Texans (42%) held favorable views of Trump in 2022, decreasing to 34% in 2023, then increasing to 39% in 2024 and 2025. Around eight in ten Republicans in Texas (79%) view Trump favorably, a proportion that has fluctuated between seven in ten and eight in ten since 2022. Texas independents have seen a significant decline in favorability for Trump, going from more than four in ten (43%) in 2022 to one-quarter (25%) today. Only 5% of Texas Democrats hold favorable views of Trump, a decrease from an already low favorability rating of 10% in 2022.
