A new PRRI report examines Americans’ views on abo

A new PRRI report examines Americans’ views on abortion legality in each state, as well as the intersection of Americans’ views on gender, pronatalism, and abortion access.

Six in ten Americans (61%) say abortion should be legal in most or all cases, while 36% of Americans say abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. Just 8% of Americans say abortion should be illegal in all cases.

Fewer than one in five residents of any state say abortion should be illegal in all cases.

The annual PRRI Census of American Religion finds

The annual PRRI Census of American Religion finds that the percentage of young men (ages 18-29) who identify as religiously unaffiliated has largely stayed the same in the past decade, with 35% identifying as a “none” in 2013 -> 35% in 2025.

Young women have grown less likely to identify as religious during that time. In 2025, 43% identified as religiously unaffiliated. Most of that growth has resulted from a decline in religious affiliation among young women of color.

As PRRI's CEO Melissa Deckman told @religionnewssvc "A lot of younger women are shedding religious labels because they don’t endorse the views of a lot of conservative and outspoken churches.”

NEW: While there has been a slight pause in the rate of religious disaffiliation, religious affiliation did not grow in 2025, according to the 2025 PRRI Census of American Religion. Though the percentage of white Christians has remained stable since 2023, this group has seen a gradual decrease from 46% in 2013. In contrast, the percentage of religiously unaffiliated Americans steadily increased (from 21% in 2013 to 28% in 2025) before it plateaued in 2025.

The annual PRRI Census of American Religion uses a random sample of 40,000 Americans to analyze national-level trends in American religious affiliation. Overall, two-thirds of Americans (66%) continue to identify as Christian, including 41% who identify as white Christian and 25% who identify as Christians of color. Roughly three in ten Americans (28%) are religiously unaffiliated, and 6% identify with a non-Christian religion.
