While both prayer and scripture reading have declined among Americans over the past decade, they remain central to many Americans’ religious practice.

Over four in ten Americans report reading a sacred text either at least once a week (25%) or monthly or yearly (18%); however, most Americans (56%) say they seldom or never read the Bible, Torah, Qur’an, or other sacred text.

In the past week, attacks on political expression

In the past week, attacks on political expression have intensified, with the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show and Vice President JD Vance urging Americans to report to employers anyone who “publicly celebrated Kirk’s death.”

Following the 2024 election, PRRI asked voters whether they felt very confident that Americans will be able to freely express their political opinions, even if they differ from the incoming presidential administration. Responses varied significantly by party affiliation.

This survey of more than 4,700 voters was conducted online between November 8 - December 2, 2024.
