QAnon, a conspiracy theory movement that emerged o

QAnon, a conspiracy theory movement that emerged online in 2017 and remains an influential force in American politics, is back in the media spotlight as President Donald Trump faces backlash from his supporters over his administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.

PRRI has tracked belief in QAnon since 2021 by measuring agreement with three key statements:
(1) “True American patriots may have to resort to violence to save our country.”
(2) “There is a storm coming that will sweep away the elites and restore rightful leaders.”
(3) “The government, media, and financial worlds are controlled by Satan-worshipping pedophiles running a global child sex trafficking ring.”

Using a composite score of the three statements, PRRI finds:
🔸 19% of Americans are QAnon believers (up from 14% in 2021)
🔸 49% are doubters
🔸 32% are rejecters

Ahead of the 2024 election, PRRI found that QAnon believers supported Trump over Harris by a margin of more than 60 points (80% said they would vote for Trump vs. 19% for Harris).

In an op-ed for @thehill, PRRI CEO Melissa Deckman, Ph.D., examines the narrative that Gen Z men are experiencing a “religious resurgence” — and why that may not hold up to the data.

Drawing on findings from the latest PRRI Census of American Religion, Deckman finds no evidence that Gen Z men are becoming more religious. In 2013, 32% of Americans aged 18 to 29 identified as religiously unaffiliated, which rose to 38% last year — an increase driven mainly by young women’s departure from religion. In 2013, just 29% of young women were religious “nones,” yet by 2024, it was 40%.

“If they [young men] are increasingly drawn to traditionalist churches, it could create yet another space where young women and men no longer spend time together, further widening what appears to be a growing gender divide across multiple fronts in society and politics.”

The IRS has declared that churches and other house

The IRS has declared that churches and other houses of worship may endorse political candidates to their congregations without violating the Johnson Amendment, a 1954 law prohibiting tax-exempt organizations from engaging in political campaigning.

PRRI’s newest Spotlight Analysis finds that a majority of Americans (75%) oppose churches and other places of worship endorsing political candidates while retaining their tax-exempt status.
