Super Tuesday Recap: The Overlap of Trumpism and Christian Nationalism

According to NPR’s coverage of yesterday’s Super Tuesday primaries, former President Donald Trump’s wins in 14 out of 15 states could make him one of the earliest candidates to clinch a GOP nomination. Additionally, at The Washington Post, Philip Bumpexamines the relationship between belief in Christian nationalist ideology and support for Trump measured in PRRI’s latest survey. Alabama, where Trump won the GOP primary with more than 80% of the vote, is one of five states where more than 45% of residents are Christian nationalism Adherents or Sympathizers.

Supreme Court Says States Cannot Remove Trump From Presidential Ballots

For PBS NewsHour, William Brangham and Ali Schmitz report on the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision that states cannot remove former President Donald Trump from their ballots based on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, the Insurrection Clause. This ruling ends the legal fight over whether states can bar Trump from its ballot, both in Colorado as well as more than 30 other states that were examining similar challenges to Trump’s eligibility. PRRI’s 2023 American Values Survey found that six in ten Americans (60%) agree that it is likely that former president Donald Trump broke the law to try to stay in power after losing the 2020 election, including 92% of Democrats, 60% of independents, and 27% of Republicans.

Majority of Latino Protestants Support Christian Nationalism

Russell Contreras at Axios looks atnew data from PRRI showing that Hispanic Protestants are the second largest religious demographic to be either sympathetic (33%) or adhere to (22%) Christian nationalist beliefs. Speaking to Contreras, author and journalist Katherine Stewart noted that white right-wing Christian leaders have been aggressive in recruiting Latino evangelical pastors. Additionally, president and founder of PRRI Robert P. Jones, Ph.D., told Contreras that Latino evangelicals also are more likely to identify as racially white. CVS and Walgreens Will Begin Selling Abortion Pills This Month

Pam Belluck at The New York Times reports that CVS and Walgreens pharmacists in several states will begin dispensing the abortion pill mifepristone after obtaining certificates under guidelines issued by the Food and Drug Administration last year. The American Pharmacists Association urged pharmacies to distribute mifepristone after anti-abortion opponents sued the F.D.A.seeking to remove mifepristone from the market. In related news, Belluck also reports that the first non-prescription birth control pill in the U.S. will be available in stores and online in the coming weeks. PRRI research finds that 84% of Americans oppose laws that restrict what types of birth control can be used to prevent pregnancy.
