Brian Calfano, PRRI-affiliated scholar Paul A. Djupe, and PRRI’s Robert P. Jones and Daniel Cox and explore why Muslims have arguably been the most consistently-demonized group in American politics of the past decade, factoring heavily in Republican presidential and congressional politics since 2002. In the chapter “Muslim Mistrust: The Resilience of Negative Public Attitudes after Complimentary Information 2016,” their explanation focuses on interlocking institutions—party, religion, and media—in encouraging beliefs about American Muslims that prove intransigent. Using data from three nationally representative surveys, and results from a randomized survey experiment, they examine the characteristics and attitudes associated with anti-Muslim beliefs.
