On Friday, PRRI CEO Robert P. Jones appeared on MSNBC’s The Reid Report to discuss how Americans are dispirited about the economy despite the release of new data from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics showing an increase in jobs and a drop in the unemployment rate. The live segment also covered the American Dream, immigration reform, and other findings from the 2014 American Values Survey.

Jones reported the public is waking up from the American Dream, with only about 4-in-10 (42 percent) Americans saying its underlying ideology–if you work hard, you’ll get ahead– still holds true today. Jones talked about our country’s increased economic instability, especially apparent among black Americans: 58 percent report living in a household of high or moderate economic instability. Jones also discussed Americans’ view on immigration reform and unaccompanied minors, made relevant with Obama’s recent refugee plan. Roughly 6-in-10 Americans consistently favor providing a way for immigrants who are currently living in the United States illegally to become citizens provided they meet certain requirements and nearly 7-in-10 Americans (69 percent) believe we should treat unaccompanied children arriving at the border as refugees, not as illegal immigrants.
